Are You The Dragon Queen? DIY 3D Printed Dragon

Dragons have always been creatures of fascination to the world. With the evolution of 3D printing advancing at such a rapid pace, it was just a matter of time before we encountered a DIY project like Braq. This great project comes from a Spanish designer who studied Fine Arts at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid. She is a designer, sculptor, and illustrator who loves fantasy creatures, robots, and action figures.

Braq

Braq is a 3D printed dragon with movable parts. The creator of the dragon physible, Sonia Verdu, designed it with simplicity in mind. All you really need are a printer, filament, and an elastic cord to build your own dragon. Braq consists of 42 separate parts which you connect using a 2-3 mm thick elastic cord.

Printing Your Own Dragon

Firstly, you need to download the STL file then get it ready for printing. There are a few recommendations offered by the creator.

  1. Use a snug bed printer because the parts have little surface contact to the base
  2. Add brim accession or raft when setting your printer’s g-code
  3. Print parts at 0.2 mm height with a fill/packing density of 10%
  4. Print the head at 0.14 mm height with a 40% density on the horns for increased durability

Assembly

After printing the parts from the STL file, you can coat them with clear nail polish or some sort of lacquer. When you are ready to build the dragon, feel free to follow the instructions provided on the assembly instruction page to get all the parts in the right places.

After you put all your parts together, you can string them together with 5 lengths of your elastic cords as shown in the instruction image.

  1. 2 for the wings (65 cm and 45 cm)
  2. 1 from head to tail (90 cm)
  3. 1 in the front feet (50 cm)
  4. 1 on the rear legs (50 cm)
